10 STEPS TO A
GREAT RESUME:
Step 1 - Pick a
Resume Format
Functional
Format
A Functional
resume format focuses on skills, not on
job-titles, employers, etc. A Functional resume
is best if you want to highlight specific skills
and strengths that your most recent jobs or
education don't necessarily reflect.
Chronological
Format
A Chronological
resume format focuses on your job titles and
most recent experiences that relate to your
desired field A Chronological resume begins with
your most recent employers and education listed
first, then previous employers, etc
Step 2 - Name,
Number, and Address
Your name,
number and complete address should be listed at
the top of the page
Use a larger
font size for your name
Spell out
everything, such as Street for St., Road for
Rd., Avenue for Ave.
Step 3 - Job
Objective
A functional
resume may require a job objective to give it
focus
A job objective
contains one or two sentences describing the job
you are seeking
Examples:
Seeking entry level position in sales.
In search of a position in
HTML
programming commensurate with
my
required skills and
experience.
Don't include
job objective in chronological resume
Your job
objective should give your resume a sense of
what type of job your searching for
Step 4 - List
Experience and Education
Emphasize
experience in a particular job area
Stress your
results, elaborating on how you contributed in
your previous jobs
Mention
numerical figures such as monetary budgets,
dollar amounts, number of employees supervised,
etc.
Slant your
accomplishments toward the type of position you
hope to obtain
Mention
degrees, certificates, and special awards
received that pertain to the type of job you are
seeking
Note courses or
research projects you participated in that might
be relevant to the type of employment you seek
Step 5 - Begin
Sentences with Action Verbs
Portray your
self as someone who is active, aggressive, and
gets things done
Try to include
as many action verbs on your resume as possible

employer want you
Step 7 - Omit
Certain Items
Don't include
Social Security number, marital status, health,
citizenship, age, scholarships, irrelevant
awards, irrelevant associations, previous pay
rates, previous supervisor names, and reasons
for leaving previous jobs
Step 8 -
References

"References available upon request" at the
bottom of the page
You can also
leave this information off your resume

Someone Review Your Resume

resume reviewed by someone who is attentive to
details, can effectively critique your writing,
and will give an honest and objective opinion
