Writing An Effective Cover Letter

It is a good idea to always include a cover letter because it can let an employer know more about you. It let's employers find out things about you that are not included in your resume. Your cover letter should grab the hiring manager's attention and improve your chance of receiving an interview. Employers will look over your writing carefully and see how well you fit into the job they are recruiting for.

Your cover letter must be accurate and grab the hiring manager's attention. The first few lines of your cover letter can make or break you, so make it count. Hiring managers look for information they can absorb quickly. Remember they are probably looking at lots of other resumes so get to the point quickly. Letters longer than one page are too long.

Put your name, address, phone, fax numbers and e-mail address at the top of the page. Check the spelling and contact information several times. You don’t want employers to discard your resume or cover letter because of a typographical error or because they can’t reach you. Check it ... and then check it again!

The first paragraph of your letter should state how you learned about the job opening. If you saw the job on this web site, say you saw it here! State your objective and the specific position you’re seeking.

Be sure to mention why you’re interested in the job and how you can be an asset to the company. It is very important to mention a specific reason why you’re the right person for the job. Give them a reason to pick up the telephone and call you!

Before closing your letter, tell the hiring manager you’ll follow up to confirm receipt of your resume. This is a great way to contact the hiring manager. Candidates who show initiative often impress employers. Doing this will increase your chance of gaining an interview.

A clear, concise cover letter often can often grab the employer's attention and help you land an interview
